The organizations Black Lives Matter and Black Infinity Complex projected the names of black men, women and children who have been killed by police during the closing session of the Possessive Investments: Systems of Power, Possibilities of Dissent conference at UCLA.
Former SNCC and Black Panther organizer Hank Jones was invited to share his experiences of protesting in the 1960s at the UCLA conference. The military veteran says the murder of Emmett Till impacted his activism.
Graduate student Shamell Bell is also an organizer for Black Lives Matter and Black Infinity Complex. She believes there are multiple ways to protest, including urban dance.
Povi-Tamu Bryant shared information about the history of Black Lives Matter LA during the closing session of the conference.
Krucial “The Liberator” shared her moves with fellow activists and academics at the UCLA conference sponsored, in part, by the History Graduate Student Association, the Black Graduate Student Association and the departments of History, African American Studies, and the Office of Residential Life.
The topic of this breakout session during the conference was “Mechanics of Alienation” and it covered topics ranging from midwives to the politics of forgiveness.
